Your Instagram Posts Have Been Showing Up on Google This Whole Time

Your social posts have been turning up in Google results for years. You just had no way to see it.

As of this week, you do.

What Google launched

On July 7, Google introduced a new Search Console property type called platform properties. On July 29 it finished rolling out to every account.

Connect your Instagram, TikTok, X or YouTube account and you can see how your posts perform in Google Search and Discover: clicks, impressions, average position, and the actual search terms people used before they landed on your post.

You don't need a website for it. If your business currently lives entirely on Instagram, this still works.

What it doesn't do

The coverage has been a little breathless, so let me be clear.

This is not a replacement for Instagram Insights. No likes. No saves. No follower growth. No watch time from the home feed.

It shows one thing: how your social content performed inside Google.

That's a narrow slice. It's also a slice nobody could see before - which is why it's worth twenty minutes and not a whole afternoon.

Why it matters for a service business

A few weeks ago I wrote that getting found isn't one moment. It's a series of small ones, most of which happen before your homepage ever loads.

This is another one, and almost nobody was counting it.

Search your own business name. Your Instagram profile is often sitting right there in the results, sometimes above your website. If your site is thin or ageing - and a lot of the ones I see are - your social account may be doing more of the search work than your site is.

Your Instagram isn't a separate channel.

It's part of how you get found.

But the best thing in the report isn't the click count. It's the queries.

You're about to find out what people typed into Google before they found you. Not what you assumed they'd search. What they actually searched.

I've spent years trying to pull that language out of clients - the real words, not the industry words. Now it's sitting in a free report.

If people are reaching your pricing post through “how much does a deep clean cost in Vancouver,” you've just learned what your service page should say. The post was the accident. The query is the strategy.

One caution. If you're a small local business, these numbers will be small at first. Forty impressions on a post you made in eleven minutes is information, not a failure. Judge the pattern over two months, not the number on day one.

How to turn it on

Five minutes, once per account.

1. Go to Search Console at search.google.com/search-console and sign in with your business Google account.

2. Click the property dropdown in the top left and choose “Add property.”

3. Pick your platform: Instagram, TikTok, X or YouTube.

4. Follow the on-screen steps to authorize the connection. You'll sign in to the social account and approve the link - you're not handing a password to a third party.

5. Repeat for each profile you want to track.

6. Wait a few days for data to appear.

If you don't see the option yet, you haven't done anything wrong - Google rolled this out gradually. Check back in a week. The official documentation is at support.google.com/webmasters/answer/17148418.

Where this leaves you

This doesn't change what you should post. It changes what you can learn from what you've already posted.

For years, the honest answer to “is my Instagram doing anything for my search visibility?” was: probably something, but I can't show you.

That answer is now obsolete. You can look.

Set it up this week. Then leave it alone for a month.
